I'm sitting on a plane heading south and I can hardly believe what's happening. Only 20 hours ago I was having breakfast with my mom and my sister discussing when our baby-to-be might make its appearance. Little did I know that I would soon be getting an amazing phone call.
It all started Thursday morning when my agency called to tell me our birth mother was in labour. I was shocked! We had four due dates and we hadn't even reached the first one. I quickly called Pierre at work to give him the good news. While I was on the phone with him, the agency called back to say the contractions had stopped and they were sending her home; false alarm. I went about my day knowing our baby might not be born for a few weeks.
Friday morning was a new day and I met my mom and sister for breakfast. After breakfast my sister stopped by for a few minutes. I wasn't home ten minutes that the phone rang... It was the agency again... A baby GIRL had been born during the night! The details were few but the little one was healthy and the birth mom was doing well. I hung up the phone and squealed to my sister: it's a girl!! After the requisite hugging and jumping around I texted Pierre. I already knew he was in a meeting and didn't want to stress him if he couldn't get out right away. My first text to him was casual: "call me after your meeting". After about 15 minutes I sent a second email stating the importance of calling me: "we have news. Call me now or after your meeting." He called about 10 minutes later and wasn't expecting the incredible news I had! Although we are fairly calm people, Pierre has always been the rock: solid and stoic. There was nothing stoic about the panic in his voice yesterday! I couldn't help but laugh... he was just like all those daddies-to-be you seen on TV when the wife says it's time to go to the hospital. :-)
The planning went into overdrive. Luckily, we were fairly well prepared by this time. In fact the baby's room was completed just a few days earlier. Pierre had to spend the day at work, getting everything ready for his leave of absence, so I organized things on my end. Soon, flights, hotel and car were booked and bags were packed... We were ready to head south!
So that brings us to this moment in time... Sitting on plane, heading south of the border. It feels different than last time. I'm calmer and maybe a little more guarded. We've been here before and know nothing is official yet. While things are so much more positive this time, there's still an edge to our excitement. Even still, I feel like this time it's the real deal... In a few hours I'll be holding my daughter.
We'll be arriving at our destination in the early afternoon and will immediately make our way to the hospital to meet our case worker, the birth mother and our daughter. If all goes well, we could be leaving the hospital with our little girl tomorrow afternoon.
So send all the prayer, good thoughts and positive vibes you can muster... Today, we meet our daughter.
